(NYSE: PFE) today announced the launch of the world’s first and most successful generic Viagra trial (GST) to assess the efficacy and safety of a new formulation of sildenafil citrate, a potent phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, in men with erectile dysfunction (ED).
The trial will provide men with a single dose of sildenafil citrate 20 mg taken as a single, non-invasive, continuous-dosing, once-daily pill. Sildenafil citrate is the active ingredient in the generic form of Pfizer’s Viagra® and Pfizer’s Cialis® (generic equivalent of Cialis®, also known as Tadalafil), which together with the active ingredient sildenafil citrate has helped increase the duration of erectile function in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED).
According to Pfizer, sildenafil citrate was effective in 81% of patients who took it and is now the third-best-selling medication on the U. S. market. Its safety and effectiveness have been demonstrated in over 1,100 men with ED. Viagra® and Cialis® have also been proven to be effective treatments for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition that causes high blood pressure in the arteries supplying the lungs. The trials enrolled as many men as 3600 men (with a mean age of 50) and the results of the trials indicated that the combination of sildenafil citrate and tadalafil had a positive and statistically significant effect on erections in 80% of the participants. The combination of sildenafil citrate and tadalafil has been studied in more than 100,000 men with ED.
